Parent Policies

PARENTS NEED TO BE REACHABLE BY PHONE AT ALL TIMES WHILE THEIR CHILD IS IN PRACTICE!!!

  • The Water Warriors coaching staff encourages parents to watch practice from time to time. It’s probably not best to watch practice every day as neither is to never come to the pool. The reality of carpools and transporting young swimmers is that many parents are present every day, though you don’t necessarily need to watch every minute of practice. Here are some important guidelines to keep in mind when observing a practice:

  • First, young swimmers want their parents’ approval more than anything. If they know you are watching practice, it’s only natural for some of their attention to be directed to you. However, for the swimmers to learn as much as possible, it is imperative coaches have your child’s undivided attention during practice. We ask that you do not communicate with your child during practice thus competing with a coach for his/her attention.

  • Second, we insist that parents do not interrupt the coaches on deck while they are coaching. Since there are different age groups swimming right after your child’s practice and speaking with the coaches is not feasible, please email the Head Coach; Darian Russell. waterwarriors.main@gmail.com

  • Third, our coaches spend a considerable amount of time planning weekly training sessions for each of their practice groups. Each training set or instructional drill has a purpose and one practice and/or practice set  often builds on another throughout the week and/or season. If you have not attended all practice sessions, you may not understand the purpose of what the swimmers are doing on any given day.

  • Finally, please do not try to coach your child based on what you see (or think you don’t see) him/her do. Many times when teaching stroke skills, the coaches ask our swimmers to do things that might not look correct or might actually be illegal according to the rules, but does have important purpose in teaching skills (i.e. swimming one arm fly or swimming breaststroke with a flutter kick or dolphin kick).

  • With these various points in mind, we ask parents to stay off the pool deck during practice hours and not attempt to coach your child based on what you observe at practice.  At the South Amboy YMCA parents should watch practice from the lobby area.

  • We do request that parents drop their swimmers off no more than 30 minutes before practice and pick them up no more than 15 minutes after practice. The coaches have responsibilities outside of practice times and may not be available to "watch" swimmers before and/or after scheduled practices.

  • Please make sure a coach is present before leaving your child at the pool

Practice is very important in the development of athletes.  We have all heard the saying "practice makes perfect", I like to say practice makes progress but either way practice is important.  Attendance will be taken and documented.

Swimmers ages 10 and under should strive to maintain a minimum of 70% attendance

Swimmers ages 11/12 should maintain a minimum of 75% attendance

Swimmers ages 13/14 should maintain a 80% minimum attendance

Swimmers ages 15 and over 90% attendance

This is the minimum attendance and swimmers should aim to have close to 100%

Practice Ettiquette

Do not come to practice on an empty/ full stomach.  Eat an after school snack.  Do not eat within the hour before practice.

  • Strive to get to practice early.  If you’re early you’re on time and if you are on time you are late.

  • Swimmers who arrive early are to be out on deck. They can stretch, relax, talk quietly with teammates, do their homework, or read a book until practice begins.  NOT WALKING OR PLAYING AROUND IN OTHER PARTS OF THE BUILDING!.

  • NO TALKING WHEN COACHES ARE TALKING.  It is ok to talk quietly between sets, get to know the swimmers in your lane.  But once the coach begins speaking, you must STOP TALKING!

  • Get in at the beginning of the practice and get a good warmup

  • Listen to the coach while the set is being given, and clarify any misunderstandings with the coach.  Not with other swimmers in the lane if you are confused.

  • Learn the names of the swimmers in your lane.

  • Learn to read the pace clock (Know both your time and the interval).

  • Stay on the interval and help others stay on the interval. Do not leave late.

  • Count your laps and stop at the appropriate number.

  • The slowest person in the lane should be able to make the interval with some rest.

  • Get the right order in your lane (Fastest to slowest).

  • Don’t swim on the feet of the person in front of you.  Swim around them.

  • Leave at least :05 apart, but always in increments of :05 (:10, :15, :20)

  • Stay to the right side of the lane. (left side during Backstroke)

  • Turn at the wall in the middle of the lane (Like the shape of the tip of a giant football).

  • If you about to get lapped stop at the next wall and let others pass you.

  • Be aware of where others are in the lane. Anticipate when they’ll catch you and pull over.

  • Don’t push off right in front of someone about to turn if they are faster.

  • Finish swims to the wall and move to the left to allow others to finish to the wall.

Cancellation of practice: The coach will determine when practice needs to be cancelled in the case of inclement weather or other issues. In case of bad weather, follow the rule NO SCHOOL= NO POOL. Water Warriors Aquatic Team will be following the facility we are at that day’s procedures for closing due to inclement weather. The Head Coach will also send out an email to all swimmers.
